Our Programs & Projects
The Zydeco Historical & Preservation Society, Inc. supports and maintains five major initiatives. All donations, profits from ZHPS events, and services provided by the ZHPS support the following initiatives:
ZHPS Oral History & Restoration Project
The Z.H.P.S. Oral History & Restoration Project is an ongoing initiative with the following objectives:
To empower people who have historically (and presently) defined the Creole culture of Southwest Louisiana and Texas to convey, document and preserve irreplaceable segments of Zydeco Music and Creole heritage: historic structures, oral and musical histories and traditions, and other physical artifacts.
The Luke Collins Memorial and Burial Restoration Project
The Luke Collins Memorial and Burial Restoration Project (named after Luke Collins, known as the "godfather of Zydeco Music" and the first person in the world to develop as radio program dedicated to Creole and Zydeco Music) is an ongoing initiative dedicated to:
Assisting in facilitating a "dignified internment" for Zydeco/Blues and Southern Soul musicians as well as other cultural servants who have made significant contributions to Creole Culture.
Documenting, mapping, as well as the preservation and protection of burial sites of Zydeco/Blues and Southern Soul musicians as well as other cultural servants who have made significant contributions to Creole Culture.
The Zydeco Squeezebox Series
The Zydeco Squeezebox Series is series of live musical and cultural performances which aims to target and expose a new generation of people to contemporary and traditional Creole and Zydeco Music in particular and the black Creole Culture of Southwest Louisiana and Texas in general, as well as recognize the historical role and significance of key culture servants played in the development of Zydeco Music and Creole Culture. The Zydeco Squeezebox Series achieves these objectives by:
Hosting educational musical and cultural performances with older Creole and Zydeco cultural servants together with younger Creole and Zydeco cultural servants who in turn share their individual histories, experiences, and prospective on the Creole culture of Southwest Louisiana and Texas.
Cultural education sessions where Zydeco and Creole musicians and cultural servants share their cultural talents with young aspiring musicians and cultural servants in the tradition of the informal apprenticeship structure of Creole culture.
